Health
I’ve realized fitness is very important. Recently, I learned my dad’s health is not so good. He went to the doctor’s office, got a few blood tests done and they came back pretty bad. He has some type of problem developing with his thyroid gland and his sugar and cholesterol levels and blood pressure are through the roof. (Side note: He has Type 2 Diabetes, meaning sugar=bad.) In addition, he now has a cataract and his teeth are pretty bad. I have barked at my dad before to get healthier by improving his diet and exercise, but he refuses to listen. And now that his health is pretty poor, I’m buckling down and making him eat soups and salads, rather than the oily Indo-Pak food he normally eats and making him exercise at least 30 minutes a day. And to avoid looking like a hypocrite, I’m cutting back on sugary foods and doing cardio. (Coach Bailey would be pleased.) Any one know any good recipes for diabetic people? And does anyone have any tips on how to improve your health?

Hey there,
being hard on your dad is probably a good thing. Diabetes is a really serious disease and a lot of bad stuff can result if a patient isnt taking care of him/her self. But, you should understand that treating the disease is really hard at times, especially for people who are used to eating a lot of ethnic foods and have a hard time adjusting. Make your dad monitor his blood sugars hella. I test about 4-6 times a day and make him do the same. Review his meter every day and make sure that he is between 80-120, that is what most endo’s call “normal.” After you know where his blood sugars are, diet is the next step. Yes, cutting down on fattening foods/etc is really good. Proteins and, of course, carbs have a toll on blood sugar. So, keep the red meats, white meats, and animal products at a min with your dad. For the carbs he has, try to make them complex carbs, they last longer and provide more energy. That being said, a vegetarian/vegan diet is the best. My dietitian was really happy when I went green, I am trying to get back there btw haha. Last but not least, exercise is golden. Cardio helps get rid of some of that sugar and muscle metabolizes better than fat.
